The Government of South Africa provided grant funding for the removal of invasive plant species that were negatively impacting the environment and water supply. A nationwide public works programme helped clear one million hectares of land, contributing to a more sustainable water cycle and increased protection of biodiversity. The measure also contributed to economic and social development.

Innovative water management in Singapore

Singapore has historically suffered from freshwater shortages and water insecurity. In the 2000s the Government of Singapore launched new policies to address this, providing grant funding and support to R&D in public sector and industry, investing in infrastructure to improve water cycle management, including water and wastewater treatment, and raising consumer awareness about water conservation through public information and labelling schemes. This helped increase water independence and establish a thriving and innovative water industry.

The FINO3 Offshore Wind Research Platform

The FINO3 research platform in Germany was developed in order to increase knowledge about offshore wind construction in the North Sea. As a result of Regional, National and EU public grant partial funding for R&D, companies are now better informed about the technical requirements for offshore installations, which has stimulated investment in the region. 

CombinES: Maximising public finance impact in energy efficiency projects

The CombinES project developed a financing mechanism which utilises both public and private funding sources to increase the impact of funding for energy efficiency measures in buildings. By integrating both thermal envelope and technological measures into a comprehensive renovation plan, the model can also maximise the potential energy savings in a given project. 

Promoting Community Wind Farming in Wales

Wales (United Kingdom) is implementing policies to promote the development of community owned wind farms. By involving residents in the planning process, and allowing them to share the benefits of local, renewable energy production, community projects can overcome much of the traditional resistance to wind energy. Supportive policies and initiatives are important to encourage such community led developments. 

Framework Act on Low Carbon and Green Growth in South Korea

The government of South Korea views green technology and green industry as the engine to promote economic growth and create employment opportunity. The "Framework Act on Low Carbon, Green Growth" was announced in January 2010 for clarifying the relevant official organization and the green growth responsibility and characters in industries.

Green agricultural and island communities’ programme for Greece’s remote and island areas

The ‘Green agricultural and island communities – new development model’ programme (“ΡΑΣΙΝΕΣ ΑΓΡΟΤΙΚΕΣ ΚΑΙ ΝΗΣΙΩΤΙΚΕΣ "ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΕΣ": ΝΕΟ ΠΡΟΤΥΠΟ ΑΝΑΠΤΥΞΗΣ”) provides support to municipalities. The €50 million programme promotes renewable energy systems and energy efficiency measures in Greek remote and island areas with fewer than 1000 inhabitants. The first call for applications was launched end of 2012, the projects are running between 2013-2015.

 

ASEIC, the ASEM Eco-Innovation Centre for SMEs

ASEIC was founded as a support to business instrument in ASEM[1] countries to bring about innovation in corporate strategy and products through eco-innovation while developing global green growth opportunities. Through advisory services, dissemination of information, and communications, ASEIC serves as a point of convergence for ASEM governments and SMEs in need of green transitions.

The Czech ECO-ENERGY programme 2007-2013

The programme ECO-ENERGY (‘Eko-energie’), was carried out by the Priority Axis 3 ‘Efficient Energy’ of the Czech Republic ‘Operational Programme Enterprise and Innovation 2007-2013’. The Programme aimed at stimulating entrepreneurs, particularly SMEs, to reduce the energy demand of their production, to use primary energy sources, and to promote higher utilisation of renewable and secondary energy sources.

 

UK’s action research for improved product refurbishments

Rebus (Re-engineering Business for Sustainability) is a transdisciplinary research project with grant funding from Defra. It tests and pilots a scheme in which baby and nursery equipment can be rented or leased and is professionally refurbished after heavy use.

ECO-INNOVERA

ECO-INNOVERA is a European network of 25 partners addressing a wide range of eco-innovation topics from research to dissemination. Applying the concept of systemic eco-innovation, ECO-INNOVERA focuses on promoting sustainable practices in order to boost the implementation of eco-innovation in Europe.

Innovation in public procurements -funding scheme of Tekes in Finland

In Finland, the public sector annually spends approximately €27 million on public procurement. By utilising innovation, the public sector can produce cheaper and better services for its citizens.

Aided by fresh solutions, the public sector can satisfy the demands of future generations. In order to support procurement of innovation, Tekes is providing incentives for preparing an innovative procurement.

International Climate Initiative - Strengthening transparency, accountability, anticorruption and public oversight in climate finance governance

Since 2008, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) has been financing climate and biodiversity projects in developing, newly industrialised and transitioning countries. 

NeRess (network for resource efficiency)

NeRess, the network for resource efficiency in Germany combines the knowledge and experience of its members on resource efficient production, products, and management in an interdisciplinary and practical way. The network is enhancing the cooperation by encouraging information exchange and networking among the stakeholders. 

GreenEvo – Technology Accelerator for green tech “Made in Poland”

GreenEvo - Green Technologies Accelerator is a Polish programme for entrepreneurs, initiated and managed by the Ministry of the Environment. GreenEvo identifies the best Polish environmentally sound technologies and supports their international transfer. The initiative takes the form of a contest whereby participating companies submit innovative green solutions and winners are selected on an annual basis. The programme has successfully supported green-tech exports “Made in Poland”. 

Zero Waste Scotland - helping Scotland to become more resource efficient

Zero Waste Scotland is an organisation funded by the Scottish Government to deliver its Zero Waste Plan, which is based on the principles of resource efficiency and circular economy. Besides its core activities of providing funding and training, Zero Waste Scotland is active in communication and engagement of various stakeholders and offers a range of online tools, templates and apps.

Eminent effect of the Soil and Groundwater Pollution Remediation Fund in Taiwan

Since 1981, Taiwan has continually encountered problems of soil and groundwater pollution generated by improper disposal of industrial wastewater, wastes, and air. To address this issue, the Environmental Protection Administration, Taiwan embarked on establishing relevant regulations: The "Soil and Groundwater Pollution Remediation Act" was officially announced by the President in 2000.

The KAP approach (Knowledge – Awareness – Prediction). KAP (Knowledge of past performance and Awareness of the present state, enabling the Prediction of future outcomes) aims at providing manufacturing standards in an holistic approach for achieving energy efficiency in industry. To this end, KAP focussed on defining production indicators that included sustainability criteria and energy efficiency.

German RETech Partnership (GRP) – a network of experts in the waste and recycling sector

The RETech Partnership is an independent network of mainly German companies and institutions in the waste management and recycling sector. The objective of the Partnership is to set up a portal for export-oriented recycling and waste companies. Its aims at promoting the sector of clean-tech, fostering worldwide technology transfer, providing access to German expertise and creating new market opportunities for German firms.
