The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) System of South Korea was introduced in 2003 to promote take-back and recycling of a number of product groups and support the emergence of a circular economy. The EPR Scheme aims to pass financial and legal responsibility for the management of an end-of-life product to product manufacturers, thoughsetting regulatory requirements and performance standards that incentivise waste prevention and life-cycle thinking at design stage.

The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, ‘Rijkswaterstaat’ (RWS), designed a life-cycle analysis (LCA) software tool which would assist them to carry out a LCA of building and renovation solutions. Taiwan's eco-friendly textiles go global : Gray Eco Blanket

DA.AI (Great Love) Gray Eco Blankets are made from recycled PET bottles collected by 80,000 volunteers in the rubbish recycling stations of Tzu Chi Foundation throughout Taiwan. All the bottles are turned into synthetic fibres to make blankets and clothing with the aim of distributing to relief operations worldwide.

Reduced use of fossil fuels in the shipping industry by the introduction of sky sails

A new kind of eco-design for a power system using wind power enables the shipping industry to save energy by reducing the use of fossil fuel. Using flying kites connected to an electric power generator can produce cheaper and vastly more energy than conventional power plants.

SOMABAT: Novel SOlid MAterials for high power Li polymer BATteries for the manufacturing and recycling of automotive batteries.

An environmental friendly and low cost Li polymer battery with high energy density was developed. Synthetic carbon and other materials coming from agricultural wastes were obtained to make up the anode. Novel nanostructured cathode materials based on lithium iron and manganese phosphate allowed maximum energy storage in minimum space. And polymeric materials made up the electrolyte, thereby avoiding safety issues (e.g. issues related to leakages, short circuits, overcharge).

The REMake voucher scheme is providing support to manufacturing SMEs by allowing them to access external technical, business and innovation expertise to assess their company’s resource use and waste management. This article focuses on setting up an innovation vouchers scheme, more precisely on the REMake voucher experience in Wales, where emphasis was placed on increasing the use of recycled materials in manufacturing.

FRIT-REC

FRIT-REC project aims at eco-designing the manufacturing process of frits and enamels. During the production of frits and enamels, micronized fluoride lime (MFL) by-product can be generated. The project allows producing high-value MFL by-product that can be used as raw material in the production of new frits and enamels.

BEYWATCH

The Building Energy Watcher, BEYWATCH project, developed a multidisciplinary solution to improve the overall energy efficiency of the electric value chain from the utility company to the households. The solution implies reducing energy consumption at home, managing energy demand, balancing demand and production, diversifying local energy sources, and providing economic incentives to the main actors.
