SCAP is a voluntary initiative managed by WRAP. Aiming to improve the sustainability of clothing across its lifecycle, it brings together industry, government and the service sector to reduce resource use by developing sector-wide targets. Leading clothing sector companies in the UK have pledged to measure and reduce their environmental footprints by signing up to the ‘SCAP 2020 Commitment’

PIUS®-Check – integrating resource efficiency into SME’s production processes

The PIUS®–Check is a process-oriented material flow analysis developed by the Efficiency Agency (EFA) North Rhine-Westphalia. It deals with resource and energy efficiency in industry and serves to determine and improve the ecological and economic potential of manufacturing SMEs. An EFA team of engineers conducts the initial audit, identifies material and resource efficiency potentials in companies and make suggestions for changes.

Green Suppliers Network

The Green Suppliers Network aims to minimise carbon footprints by reducing energy consumption, increasing productivity, and driving innovation. Its members, who are large manufacturers from across the value chain, benefit from customised, hands-on assessments of production processes to develop their business in a more sustainable way.

Greenovate! Europe (G!E)

Greenovate! Europe is a European expert group dedicated to the development of sustainable businesses. Its members are experienced professionals who facilitate and communicate innovation processes for environmental technologies along the entire innovation value chain. G!E provides innovation support services at European level to EU projects, research laboratories, technology developers, companies willing to acquire new technologies, and investors.

Optimising industrial production by using data from machines and sensing devices

The KAP approach (Knowledge – Awareness – Prediction). KAP (Knowledge of past performance and Awareness of the present state, enabling the Prediction of future outcomes) aims at providing manufacturing standards in an holistic approach for achieving energy efficiency in industry. To this end, KAP focussed on defining production indicators that included sustainability criteria and energy efficiency.

Use of life cycle assessment and index for recyclability tools to achieve sustainable production throughout Renault’s vehicle value chain.

Renault, an auto manufacturer in France and Japan, uses a range of management tools to systematically optimise sustainable production at each stage of its product lifecycle.

A new textile production process for developing viscose

Using softwood in order to produce textiles is not a new technique, but producing it from an environmentally friendly process is. Domsjö Fabriker has developed a chlorine-free process for manufacturing viscose, which can be used in clothing as an alternative to oil-based fabrics, at a lower environmental impact.

More environmentally friendly fish feed

This project investigates the potential to produce single cell proteins from industrial residual streams from the forest industry, to be used as a part in fish feed. The aim is to replace fish meal, which is often used in fish feed, with a substitute that targets environmental impact reduction.

Trials conducted in the Biorefinery Demo Plant have been successful.

European Industrial Symbiosis Association (EUR-ISA)

The objective of the European Industrial Symbiosis Association (EUR-ISA) is to connect the various industrial symbiosis networks established in different European Member States. It uses a knowledge sharing platform for sharing resources, data, best practice, innovative ideas and expertise. This helps to enable a more rapid, wide scale implementation of industrial symbiosis across Europe, based on the proven models of EUR-ISA members.[1]

Fertilisers from wastewater sludge

A European consortium developed a manufacturing process to exploit the nutrient potential of sewage sludge in agriculture, in the form of Organo-Mineral-Fertilisers (OMF).

CAPWA - CAPture WAter – A new source of water

The CAPWA project has developed a novel water capture technology capable of extracting water molecules from water containing gas streams emitted from fossil fuel power plants or papermaking plants.

Implementing cradle-to-cradle concepts to create products with the right purity that can be recycled at high levels.

The company has set the goal of becoming the world leader in the production of environmentally friendly flooring. Its products are characterized by their unique design, functionality and health benefits.

NanoPCM: High performance, low cost, nano-insulation foam with improved LCA

A high performance insulating foam has been developed for building applications by the NanoPCM project. The innovation lies in the encapsulation of Phase Change Materials (PCM) within a polymer matrix with addition of nano materials, the encapsulation being carried out via a zero-waste spray-drying process.

Environmentally friendly enhancement of cellulose based materials such as wood, textiles and paper products.

An alternative method for the enhancement of cellulose based material such as wood, textile and paper, Organoclick reduces energy and toxic chemical usage through the use of bio-based catalysts. The method, which is based on organocatalysis and click chemistry, is already implemented in several commercial products within different application areas.

Cradle to Cradle (C2C) – the Dutch Region of Venlo towards a circular economy

Referred to as a global capital of Cradle to Cradle (C2C), the Dutch city of Venlo is the first municipality in the world to have fully adopted the principle of C2C on a regional scale. Engaging citizens, businesses and local authorities, the region is transforming into an innovative platform employing reverse logistics for a new circular economy with safe and healthy products.
