Underground waste transportation system for residual waste, paper and food waste

The high-tech waste sorting and transportation system in Hammarby Sjöstad eco-city in Sweden reduces the need for waste trucks to enter the city while increasing the efficiency of waste separating. An innovative vacuum suction system transports waste fractions to the city perimeter via a series of underground tunnels.

Bio-based industries from various sectors have joined forces as the “Bio-based Industries Consortium” (BIC) to help overcome an innovation “Valley of Death” by bridging the gap from research to the marketplace. As a private sector representative, BIC is a partner in the public-private partnership for Bio-based Industries (BBI)[1] with the EU.

Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA)

The Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA) is a group of environmental professionals dedicated to working towards a world without waste through public education and practical application of Zero Waste principles. By disseminating knowledge and providing support to its members ZWIA is promoting the implementation of Zero Waste Principles in various aspects.

SymbioCity is the trademarked term for Sweden's approach to sustainable urban development. The overall aim of the SymbioCityApproach is to promote Sweden's knowledge and experience on sustainable urban development internationally – and encourage these developments primarily in low and middle-income countries. 

The Mid-West Regional Planning Guidelines (RPGs) for systemic regional development

The Mid-West Regional Planning Guidelines (RPGs) are a policy framework by the Mid-West Regional Authority in Ireland, aiming to foster holistic regional development based on sustainability criteria (i.e. environmental, economic and social) criteria. The RPGs include a methodology for evidence-based policy making and consensus on decisions around potentially conflicting issues, such as land use and agriculture, urban infrastructure (water, electricity, etc), transportation routes and so on.

In order to further accelerate achieving the United Nations’ Millenium Goals[1], the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) facilitates and supports joint learning, overcoming the compartmentalisation of technical and policy work by promoting integrated approaches to the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world.[2]

 
Eurocities

EUROCITIES is a network of local governments comprising of Europe’s major cities. The network is dedicated to strengthen interest representation of cities at European level and to facilitate networking between city governments. A wide range of working groups, projects, activities and events focus on six thematic fields under the policy priorities of climate, citizens and jobs. 

ACR+ (The Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and Sustainable Resource Management)

The network develops the expertise and skills of public authorities and facilitating and raising awareness by providing support and consultancy, disseminating research results, promoting information sharing and networking

European Industrial Symbiosis Association (EUR-ISA)

The objective of the European Industrial Symbiosis Association (EUR-ISA) is to connect the various industrial symbiosis networks established in different European Member States. It uses a knowledge sharing platform for sharing resources, data, best practice, innovative ideas and expertise. This helps to enable a more rapid, wide scale implementation of industrial symbiosis across Europe, based on the proven models of EUR-ISA members.[1]

The association, which is based in Belgium, is a long-standing partnership of more than 600 members[1] with the aim of efficiently expanding wind power in the long term.
