Promoting Green Purchasing in Japan

The Government of Japan successfully introduced sustainable public procurement in its ministries and administrative agencies. Responsible purchasing is now the norm after the Government introduced mandatory sustainable criteria which must be followed when purchasing goods and services. Due to a regime of monitoring and reporting, the principle of sustainable procurement has become engrained and more than 95% of goods and services satisfy the criteria.

Removing fossil fuel subsidies in Morocco

Over a period of three years, Morocco successfully phased out fossil fuel subsidies, thereby promoting sustainable practices such as energy efficiency and renewable energy production. The Government secured cooperation from citizens by informing them and raising consumer awareness before the subsidies were removed. The change has led to more sustainable consumption of energy, and has significantly reduced the cost to the Government.

Rwanda plastic bag ban

In response to the growing problem of plastic pollution, the government of Rwanda introduced a ban on plastic bags in 2008. The law prohibits all manufacturing, use, importing and selling of non-biodegradable bags in the country. Plastic bag manufacturers were encouraged to change their business model to recycling by providing incentives, and a new industry emerged producing environmentally friendly, reusable bags. 

Korea Environmental Technology & Industry Institute (KEITI)

In order to promote the commercialisation of environmental technologies, KEITI - the Korean Environmental Industry & Technology Institute – provides a range of support services, including debt funding and innovation and business consulting, to eco-innovative SMEs in South Korea. Additionally, KEITI looks to build demand for eco-friendly or low-carbon products in Korea through a series of activities raising consumer awareness.

Live Green Toronto

The Live Green Toronto initiative helps neighbourhoods and citizens reduce their climate change impacts at the local level by promoting sustainable practices. As well as providing support (advise/consultancy) and informing about available grants, it organises engagement events aimed at raising consumer awareness. Citizens can also benefit from a scheme offering discounts on green products and services in the city, promoting sustainable consumption.

Taiwan's eco-friendly textiles go global : Gray Eco Blanket

DA.AI (Great Love) Gray Eco Blankets are made from recycled PET bottles collected by 80,000 volunteers in the rubbish recycling stations of Tzu Chi Foundation throughout Taiwan. All the bottles are turned into synthetic fibres to make blankets and clothing with the aim of distributing to relief operations worldwide.

UK’s action research for improved product refurbishments

Rebus (Re-engineering Business for Sustainability) is a transdisciplinary research project with grant funding from Defra. It tests and pilots a scheme in which baby and nursery equipment can be rented or leased and is professionally refurbished after heavy use.

By disseminating knowledge and providing support to its members ZWIA is promoting the implementation of Zero Waste Principles in various aspects.

Authoritative information about health, environmental and social performance of products and companies

GoodGuide focuses on rating everyday household products that consumers buy from offline or online retail outlets such as supermarkets or e-commerce sites. Core product categories include personal care products and household chemical and food products. GoodGuide has developed a simple 10 points rating system and a bar-code scanning iPhone app which enable consumers to receive simplified and easily accessible information on the products they are purchasing in terms of their environmental and social impacts.

Product/process innovation to reduce negative and enhance positive environmental, social and economic impacts

The German company Henkel has developed a Sustainable Consumption Index that supports the identification of opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint of products/processes and to add value to the life cycle of all of its new products.

Enabling the provision of tailored training to students in order to help them become more aware as consumers in future

The Consumer classroom is an online network for teachers which brings together an extensive library of educational resources which are relevant for consumers from across Europe. The platform provides teachers with a series of suggestions, advice and tools which support them while teaching students how to be responsible consumers

Stimulating sustainable consumption in public procurement

In order to promote sustainable consumption in public organizations, a method for considerate design in public procurement was developed by the region of Västra Götaland in Sweden. The method supports responsible purchasing by helping public organizations as well as architects and designers to reduce environmental impact when considering changing the business’s work environment.

To ensure more responsible purchasing, considering sustainable development, the region of Västra Götaland in Sweden has developed a method for sustainable procurement in public organizations. The method includes a “Green” list that can be used as a tool to help making sustainable choice when buying interior design products.

The Swedish Tool for Ecologically Sustainable Procurement provides support to public organizations

The Swedish Environmental Management Council has developed a tool for ecologically sustainable procurement to help public and private organizations make procurement processes more environmentally friendly, supporting responsible purchasing. The EKU-tool provides environmental criteria for different product groups, making it easier to define environmental requirements.

Nordic Ecolabel – a Nordic Swan representing environmentally sound products and services

The Nordic Ecolabel, or Nordic Swan, is a voluntary labelling scheme that contributes to sustainable consumption. It takes into account a product’s whole life-cycle and evaluates its environmental impacts. The Ecolabel is predominant in DenmarkFinlandIcelandNorway and Sweden; it pertains to 63 different product groups and services.

WRAP is a non-for profit company in Great Britain, providing support and a platform for organisations to work together to measure, improve and communicate on environmental performance, develop sustainable products and use resources in an efficient way.[1]

 

Locally run food cooperatives and outlets to encourage consumption of locally grown food by the communities.

Community food co-operatives are up and running in countries such as the United States, the United KingdomSwitzerland and Germany with the goal of sourcing good quality, fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as meat and fish products, locally for the members of the community food co-op. Products sold through food co-ops come from local sourcing.
